Mindset

For the past decade I have had the privilege of working with people with global reach with many different skills and backgrounds,from marketing and coaching gurus to medical professionals, research scientists, engineers, CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies, Olympic athletes and even the mom next door, and the one fundamental truth I’ve learnt that their success in whatever area they are in, was and is based on their ability to influence. Influence is the greatest power we can have.

As a Martial Arts instructor  and entrepreneur for the past there  decades  I have searched for more than how to just punch and kick. I wanted to learn what my first Instructor referred to as the ‘Ultimate Art‘ and the Ultimate fighting stance that he called the ‘Stance of no Stance’ because the ultimate martial art was as he put it, the ability to win the fight without fighting. So the Ultimate Art as I see it is knowing how to get someone to comply, but with it you carry the responsibility to use these skills to help others aquire what they need and want, and not to have them do things and purchase products and services that are of no use to them. You see if you help enough people get what they want, you ultimately will get what you want. With that in mind I began to do research into the Psychology of compliance. I wanted to discover the psychological principals of influence that guides a person or group of people to comply with a request.

What I discovered through my own experimentation and countless hours of reading and studying human behaviour and the masters of influence was a set of principals, habits and beliefs that have a massive impact on our ability to influence. What I realised I had found as a self defence expert and behavioural profiler was my new set of weapons, my ultimate weapons of influence.

Those who master the art of influence have the ability to move people emotionally and impact in an amazing way what they do. Influence is about leading and those who influence make contributions beyond themselves.

Influence or Manipulation?

The difference between influence and manipulation lies primarily in the intention and ethics behind the actions, as well as the degree of control exerted over others.

Influence refers to the ability to have an effect on someone's beliefs, attitudes, or actions through persuasion, guidance, or inspiration. It often involves the use of logical reasoning, emotional appeals, or the presentation of compelling arguments to sway others. Influence is generally considered to be a more positive and ethical approach, as it respects the autonomy and free will of individuals. Influencers typically aim to bring about positive change or help others make informed decisions based on their own values and interests.

Manipulation, on the other hand, involves influencing someone with hidden motives or deceptive tactics to gain an unfair advantage or control over them. Manipulators may use tactics such as lying, deceit, guilt-tripping, intimidation, or exploiting vulnerabilities to achieve their desired outcomes. The intent behind manipulation is often self-serving and can involve disregarding or undermining the autonomy and well-being of others. Unlike influence, manipulation is generally regarded as unethical and can cause harm or negatively impact the targeted individuals.

While the line between influence and manipulation can sometimes be blurry, the key distinction lies in the intention and the level of transparency in the tactics used. Influence operates with the goal of empowering individuals to make their own choices, whereas manipulation seeks to exploit or deceive others for personal gain.

Do you have a coach?

If not, you could be limiting your career success. That’s because coaches help you identify and focus on what’s important, which accelerates your success.

Coaches create a safe environment in which people see themselves more clearly;

Identify gaps between where the client is and where the client needs or wants to be

Ask for more intentional thought, action and behavior changes than the client would have asked of him or herself

Guide the building of the structure, accountability, and support necessary to ensure sustained commitment

Successful athletes obviously understand the power of coaching. The United Kingdom Coaching Strategy describes the role of the sports coach as one that "enables the athlete to achieve levels of performance to a degree that may not have been possible if left to his/her own endeavours."

Innovative companies understand that coaching can help career-minded professionals increase their performance at work. They invest in coaching for their senior leaders and sales representives allowing them to stay ahead of their competitors and stay at the cutting edge of advancements in Influence .
